Pensioners attempting to survive on today’s state pension are managing with 6 less a week than the average Brit spends on an evening out.

The average OAP spends just under 21 on the weekly grocery shopping compared to 27.42 spent at bars and restaurants by the average person, according to Virgin Money.

The Office of National Statistics says there are currently 1.2 million pensioners reliant on a state pension.

After buying the essentials each week, luxuries for those struggling with a state pension consist of only 3.30 for alcohol and tobacco, 6.00 on clothing and footwear and 5.90 going out to restaurants and hotels.

Virgin Money, concerned by the research, said: “We’re asking the eight million Brits who aren’t saving anything for their retirement if they could live on a pensioners shopping basket not just for one week, but every week, because at the moment that’s the retirement they’re headed for”.

New pension regulations come into force on April 6th (A Day) and the government hopes this will encourage the millions that do not have any pension provisions to start saving for their future.
